Some things that you should avoid doing when using pipe wrenches
Pipe wrench is for gripping and turning a cylindrical object (as a pipe) by using its two serrated jaws, which are designed to grip the pipe when turning in one direction only. The super strength and lightweight portability of the aluminum pipe wrench (for example) is the reason why a lot of plumbers choose it. Serrated jaws get a firm grip on pipes, and the long, rugged handle affords you super leverage and enough reach to get the job done.
Still there are some things that you should avoid doing with wrenches even if you don’t have anything closer by:
- Do not use a pipe wrench as a hammer, or strike a pipe wrench with a hammer;
- Do not use pipe wrenches on nuts and bolts;
- Do not use a pipe extender for extra leverage. Get a larger pipe wrench.
